Effective Speed Reading Techniques

How many words can you read per minute? The average high school student can read up to 200 words per minutes. College students generally go through about 400 words per minute. Why is this? Because high school students have less time constraints on there reading and they can take they time with what they read. College students on the other hand have a much less time constraint and a lot of more reading to do which enables them to read faster.

People read at different speeds due to eye span. Your eye span determines how many words you can take in. Most people can only take in 1 to 2 words at a time while others can take at least 5-10 words in at a time. To increase your eye span you have to visualize multiple words at a time which will greatly increase your eye span overtime.

Try avoiding distractions while you read. A lot of readers slow down there reading dramatically because they sit there and bite there fingernails or shake there feet really fast. By doing this you distract and slow down you visualization which in term slows down your reading speed.

When you think speed think sight. Sight reading is very important in speed reading because you have to be able to sight out the words while comprehending them. Comprehension is another big part of speed reading because you can sit there and doze off into space while reading about 700-800 words per minute but it is pointless because as soon as you’re done reading you have forgotten everything you just read. Make sure you comprehend what you are reading because speeding up what you read.

Speed reading is not impossible but it is not the easiest thing in the world. Just take your time and gradually get faster.
