Is Autism A State Of Mind?

Autism is a psychiatric disorder that becomes apparent during a child’s first two years of life. An affected child will have difficulty communicating with others, be introverted and have limited interests. Autism affects three times as many boys as girls, it’s cause is unknown, although some believe it to be hereditary. According to the National Institute of Mental Health, there are over half a million people in the USA who are suffering from autism. Early diagnosis and therapy can greatly improve the child’s communication and language skills, however there is no known cure for the disorder.

Autism is a brain development disorder that reduces a child’s power of self control, and quite often the child will engage in dangerous acts that may cause injury to themselves and others. Specialized attention is needed to teach an autistic child communication skills and self discipline. Medication is often prescribed by a health professional to control the child’s tantrums or bouts of depression. Patients need individual treatment, as no two given cases are alike. This makes proper, professional care for an autistic child very costly.

A nutritious diet is essential to the effectiveness of any behavioral therapy that an autistic child undergoes. Parents of autistic children should provide them with wholesome meals that are free of gluten, dairy products and sugars. Fresh fruit and vegetables should be the basis for two of the daily meals as well as vitamin supplements that may be recommended by your doctor. As a sweetener, stevia is highly recommended for people suffering from diabetes and autism. Stevia is a herb native to South America, is an excellent alternative to sugar, and is available at health food stores.

Generally, treatment for an autistic child is a never ending exercise, as the person will continually need guidance. Very few people who suffer from autism can lead an independent lifestyle, although some have been known to have certain brilliant traits. The transition from the school yard to the work place is beyond most autistic people mainly because of their naivety.

Autism, is considered by some as a state of mind, rather than a disorder, and this may certainly be the case for those autistic persons who have the artistic or musical skills of a genius.
